About

Originally from Baltimore County, I found myself, as a young man, crewing aboard traditional Chesapeake Bay sailing craft, including dredging for oysters under sail aboard a Delaware Bay Oyster Schooner.  It wasn’t long before I made my way to Penobscot Bay to crew aboard schooners in the Maine windjammer fleet and then further afield with the Baltimore clipper Pride of Baltimore as engineer on an Asia tour that concluded back home in Maryland.  The elegance of a shapely sailboat that carries on effortlessly or provides a good working platform had my full attention!

Needless to say that if you are sailing on boats you are also likely to be repairing and maintaining them.  Over several years in the wooden boat community, as crew, captain, and owner, I had the privilege of learning side by side with those who had already logged lifetimes repairing and building wooden boats. In this way my “studies” in wooden boat carpentry were born from a purely traditional apprenticeship style.  Years of experience on the sailing end of the equation have framed my understanding of how each part of a boat is meant to work, thus I have come to recognize and appreciate what creates strength and integrity.
